Why You Need a Life Plan (Not Just a Business Plan)

Most business owners and professionals are meticulous about planning for their work.
We have strategies, quarterly reviews, and KPIs. We forecast revenue, create contingency plans, and make adjustments as needed to stay on track.

But here’s the question:

Why don’t we do the same for our own lives?

We pour time, energy, and effort into planning for our businesses or careers, but when it comes to our personal lives, we often just… wing it.

That realisation hit me hard after I experienced burnout post-COVID. I had been constantly revisiting my business plan, but had no plan for my life.

I was living reactively, not intentionally.

That’s why I started looking at life planning differently.

The Life Plan Pyramid

Life Plan By Chandni Sahrawat 2025

Just like a business plan, a life plan gives you clarity and direction. Here’s how you can structure it:

1️⃣ Mission / Purpose & Identity (Lifelong)

At the very top of the pyramid is your why.
This is your reason for existence - the core of who you are and the impact you want to have in the world.
When you’re clear on this, every decision becomes easier.

2️⃣ Vision & Values (5+ Years)

Your vision is your picture of a successful future.
What do you want your life to look like in five, ten, or twenty years?
Your values guide your decisions and keep you aligned with what matters most.

3️⃣ Goals (3–5 Years)

These are your major, long-term milestones.
Think career ambitions, financial targets, health outcomes, relationships, or personal achievements.

4️⃣ Major Life Objectives (Yearly)

Break your big goals into focused, annual objectives.
What do you want to accomplish this year that moves you closer to your vision?

5️⃣ Mindset and Strategies (Quarterly)

Your mindset is your foundation; how you think affects everything you do.
Each quarter, check in with yourself. Are you aligned with your values? Are your strategies working? Adjust where needed.

6️⃣ Job / Business Tasks & Everyday Life Tasks (Weekly / Monthly)

This is where most of us spend the bulk of our time.
But instead of letting these tasks control your life, make sure they are in service of your higher goals and purpose.

Why This Matters

Work is supposed to support your life, not the other way around.
Without a life plan, it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, chasing goals that might not even matter to you long-term.

Having a life plan ensures that:
- Your business or job is aligned with your purpose.
- You stay focused on what really matters (not just urgent tasks).
- You avoid burnout by regularly reviewing and adjusting your path.
- You build a life that feels fulfilling …not just busy.

How Coaching Can Help

Creating and following a life plan can feel overwhelming at first.
That’s where coaching becomes powerful. A coach helps you:
🔍 Get crystal clear on your mission and vision
🗺 Break your goals into manageable steps
⏱ Stay accountable through life’s inevitable changes

Your Next Step

If you can plan for your business’s success, you can plan for your life’s success too.
Take some time today to reflect on your purpose, define your vision, and set one goal you can revisit regularly.

Your business has a plan.
Your life deserves one, too.
